Meet Norma
Norma took over her mother’s wig business in Los Angeles, CA to carry on her legacy after she passed away. Inspired by her mother’s values, Norma runs her business with empathy, respect, and love. One day, Norma hopes to pass the business down to her sons and generations to come.
“My biggest motivation to continue to grow and invest in my business is my mom. She would have liked to see how the store has evolved.”
Norma began selling hats, scarves, and accessories and then eyelashes until her mother got sick and asked Norma to take over her wig business. When her mother passed away, Norma decided to put everything into the business her mother started.
A former coworker introduced Norma to Grameen America and she saw it as an opportunity to invest more into her business. In 2019, Norma started with a $2,000 loan. Norma has continued to access larger and larger loans from Grameen America to invest in new wigs with different colors and textures.
“My mom showed me how to run a business with love and respect.”
Norma’s wig business is LGBTQ+ friendly and her most popular wigs are long and colorful. Norma’s store is known for high-quality wigs, drawing customers from Texas, Arizona, and New York. Norma also sells wigs made from natural hair for clients who are going through chemotherapy.
“One of the most important parts of my job is helping clients who are battling cancer choose a wig that fits and feels comfortable - they’ve become like family.”
Norma has been married to her husband for 18 years. Together they have three sons, who all help Norma with her business.
“My dream is for my sons to keep running the business - generation after generation. I want them to keep the memory of their grandmother alive by expanding her business. Grameen America has changed my life in so many ways. I’ve become more disciplined, responsible, and learned how to save money. It’s hard to save, but now I know the best thing to do is invest, invest, and invest. Since joining Grameen America, my credit score has increased from good to excellent.”
Norma hopes other business owners fall in love with their businesses in the same way she has with hers.
