Member Questions

Will Grameen America help me find peers to form a group?

The group lending model is to utilize existing social capital and trust between members to encourage responsible financial practices and repayment. Grameen America will not form groups on behalf of members.

Can Grameen America improve my credit score?

Grameen America reports repayments to Experian and Equifax in order to build our members’ credit scores. This service complements our loans and other financial services, and therefore is not offered independently.

I want to take out a loan with Grameen America, but I do not live near a branch. Can I still become a borrower?

Our model requires that members live within the communities that we serve.

Who does Grameen America lend to?

Grameen America targets women entrepreneurs living below the federal poverty line. The federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibits creditors from discriminating against credit applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status or age (provided the applicant has the capacity to enter into a binding contract); because all or a part of the applicant’s income derives from any public assistance program; or because the applicant has in good faith exercised any right under the Consumer Credit Protection Act. The federal agency that administers compliance with this law concerning this creditor is the Federal Trade Commission, Equal Opportunity, Washington, DC 20508.

Grameen America, Inc. offers loans as a "special purpose credit program" under the Federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act for the benefit of economically disadvantaged women who are interested in funding a small business and who agree to maintain the discipline that our lending model requires. Grameen America, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.
