Meet Alma
Alma runs a jewelry business in the Bronx, NY. Eight years ago, Alma became a member of Grameen America and hasn’t looked back since.
“Joining Grameen America has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I feel more empowered and capable because I’ve been able to support my family and make important business decisions.”
When one of Alma’s daughters was born with special needs, she needed a way to support her family from home and the flexibility to create her own work schedule.
“When I told my husband I was starting my own business, it was all up on me to deliver. I was investing my own money and time, so to see my business succeed left me feeling more confident in my own abilities.”
Along the way, Alma was introduced to the Grameen Promotoras program at one of her Center meetings.
“I have diabetes so the idea that I could get business and health support from one organization was incredible. The Promotoras program has helped me take better care of myself.”
For Alma, gaining knowledge about women’s health, nutrition, and disease management has been life-changing. By taking care of her physical and emotional health, Alma is able to continue to support her family and grow her business.
“As long as I’m healthy, my family is able to rely on me. If I’m feeling better and have more energy, I am able to put more time into my business and generate more income. That, in turn, allows me to support my two daughters. Because of Grameen America, I am able to invest more into their futures as well as my own.”
What Alma didn’t anticipate was finding a community and support system among fellow members.
“It’s a family. We share a variety of resources and rely on each other. We’ve just come to know each other so well. We really are invested in our collective success.”
Alma aspires to open a jewelry store one day. For now, Alma is focusing on building her financial stability, supporting her family, and staying healthy.
