Meet Marcia
Marcia is a mother who was inspired by her daughter’s entrepreneurial spirit to start a full-time business in Atlanta, GA. Marcia’s organization offers after school, weekend, and summer workshops to families with children interested in becoming an entrepreneur.
“My daughter is really the person that started my business. When she was five years old, she showed interest in becoming a business entrepreneur. She loves painting and creating art. I supported her dreams, and she told me I should teach other children so they can learn about entrepreneurship in the same way as adults. There is a clear need for these services in the community.”
As a former STEM teacher, Marcia is using her skills as an educator to run her own business. Marcia’s business supports families with entrepreneurial children between the ages of 8 and 15, teaching parents how to recognize entrepreneurial talent and foster their children’s entrepreneurial dreams. The curriculum includes information about financing businesses, opportunities at college, and marketing a business.
“Entrepreneurship is in my blood. My mother was a clothing designer and my father sold dairy products. As a daughter of two entrepreneurs, I’ve wanted to be an entrepreneur since I was ten years old.”
Marcia’s business has grown through word of mouth within the community and social media marketing. She currently supports 40 families through in-person and virtual classes with the help of two employees.
“My business helps children and their families find long-term success. I tell the kids they need to be disciplined, empathetic leaders, and have a good understanding of finances for running a business.”
As part of the classes, the children work on handmade projects to showcase at presentations where people can purchase their creations, including accessories, paintings, baked goods, and more.
“My favorite part about owning my business is when the kids finish their projects and realize their full potential as entrepreneurs.”
Marcia found out about Grameen America through a friend who was part of the program. Interested in the financial services Grameen America could provide, Marcia joined the program in November 2022. Since then, she has received $5,000 in loan capital to invest in her business, including marketing for her organization, technology to support virtual workshops, and supplies for the children’s projects.
“My dream for the future is to help more families, provide more services, and expand my business across the country.”
Marcia attends the educational trainings from Grameen America and has improved her knowledge of finances and business management. Marcia and her group go to each other’s businesses while some of the women attend the children’s presentations and buy their products.
